“On September 9, 2026, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the 2021 Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) amendments cannot be used to retroactively extend the registration requirements of anyone who committed their relevant crime prior to July 1, 2011, because doing so would be unconstitutional,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police (MSP). “The MSP did not make this change to the law. However, the department maintains the database, is required to comply with the Court’s order and is taking the necessary steps to implement the ruling. Any concerns about or efforts to change the law should be directed to the state Legislature.”
Background:
- At the time of the order, approximately 43,000 offenders were actively registered or required to be registered.
- As of Friday, September 11, the MSP has removed more than 20,000 offenders. As the review process continues, these numbers could change.
- If you are aware of an error or issue regarding information for an offender who remains registered for offenses committed on or after July 1, 2011, please contact the Sex Offender Registry Unit or contact the local law enforcement agency where the offender’s registered address is located.
- The Sex Offenders Registration Act, MCL 28.721et seq. directs the MSP to maintain a computerized law enforcement database of registrations and notices required under the SORA, maintain a public internet website separate from the law enforcement database, and provide guidelines on the type of offender information available to the public.

It would be interesting to see what $ MI received from the feds prior to this ruling for the registry and then after to show how much the PFR means to the state and its ops of the registry.
Removed…. for now. And do not need to verify this month! This was confirmed today by calling the MSP directly.
I have been saying all along that 20,000+ people will be removed when this decision became final. Where are all the naysaying fools now?
I was taken off the list on Friday, but local sheriff dep stopped by today for the annual random verification. Do local law enforcement agencies use a different registry database than the MSP database? They had my registration page printed out and I asked them when they printed it and they said “we printed it today.” I don’t think local law enforcement received any memo from MSP. The dep had no idea about the mass removal happening.
I hope the ACLU will soon weigh in on this new development. “@ B M” responded to me in a different thread that this decision is a separate case from the ACLU’s “Does” case which is currently being appealed by the state of MI. I would hope that this decision would help the appeals court in the “Does” case to see the truth here and to rule accordingly.
Also, and correct me if I’m wrong, this recent MI Supreme Court ruling seems to be final as opposed to the stupid bulls**t past ruling from the “Does” case(s) where the judge goes and give the f-ing legislature time to pass a new law to “fix” this current one, etc, etc. and stays his own decision for 90 days or whatever.
Going forward: IF the legislature tries to codify an end run around this decision, we need to IMMEDIATELY obtain an injunction before it even goes into effect! Nip this s**t in the bud!!!!!! The gloves are off, and they must remain OFF!!!
It’s absolutely wonderful that so many people have escaped the tyranny of the registry due to this decision. Please know, however, that this argument will not produce the same results in every state. For example, CA initially required everyone to register for life and so there is no ex post facto argument available in that CA to remove people from the registry. There are other ex post facto arguments that could be made in CA and other state, however, such as being listed on the Megan’s Law website which didn’t exist at the time many people were convicted.
I’m wondering if there’s grounds for us to compel the state police to destroy our DNA samples that we were forced to provide back in the early 90s 🤔
Unconstitutional search and seizure!

I believe that when the government purposely takes away or violates constitutional rights that the people in government should be personally financially liable to those who rights were taken away or whose constitutional rights were violated.
I believe that when a district attorney purposely violates the law to “win” his/her case and to punish someone, that district attorney should not only be personally financially liable but should suffer the same punishment as the defendant.
I believe that all private prisons at both the federal and state levels should be made illegal by statutes.
Cruel and illegal behavior by people in power do not stop unless people in power suffer consequences.
i think a while ago I had said the decision will come just in time for the “heros” who make the laws to make a new law that puts us all back on the sor. We all would have came off during Covid if we remember, but they made a new law (arguably nearly identical to the old law). That started the entire process over. It could definitely happen again. I’m originally from another state so I’ve been looking at laws as far as moving to other states. They have anti sanctuary laws that basically say when you move from state to state, even if the new state wouldn’t require us to register, we have to forever obey whatever our requirements were from the old state….. I wonder if the same laws would protect us should mi change the law again…. It’s what’s trapped me here for 30 years because lifetime here would have meant lifetime anywhere else, and I knew that would complicate removal if I was ever removed by law in Michigan.
So now, would the same law possibly work in my favor??? If I moved back home to Indiana now,,,, and no longer a pfr… if Michigan changed the law again then what??? I HAVE NO CLUE
Bobby S I am 1993 also 30 years.I do the exact same thing. When an elephant is born in the circuses they put a huge chain on one of its back legs . A chain so big that as the elephant tried to walk beyond the chain it would feel the pull and stop.after a time they put a smaller and smaller chain and as the years go on it ends up a small rope one the elephant could snap in an instant .but it don’t and it won’t it feels the pull of that it stops….
I’m glad you made it to see they day you were finally free.with the cancer. You always asked the questions I myself wanted to ask. I thank you for that
Everyone needs to Google their name and address. Click on the 3 dots on the right were the search comes up and ask removal and click in refresh. Until they send a legal letter out us or not. I have gotten a few Google search of my name and address removed so far.
In somewhat amusing news, some of you may have heard that the Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office, led by a GOP candidate for attorney general of Michigan, was whining on social media because they couldn’t find Larry Nassar on the registry in Michigan, and concluded it was because he was one of the 20,000 removed because his crimes took place before 2011. The problem? Nassar wasn’t on the Michigan registry because he’s in FEDERAL detention outside of Michigan (in PA right now). (I can’t post a link, but there’s an article in The Guardian as well as local Michigan sites.)
